Australian Aboriginal Culture and traditions, is one of the oldest in the world and is kept alive in the Kuranda Rainforest of Queensland. Visitors to Kuranda have several options for experiencing aboriginal cultural tours when spending time staying in Cairns.
At the 400 seat canopied rainforest amphitheatre visitors are entertained with a program of traditional dances called ‘The Pamagirri Corroboree’ that depicts gathering of food and hunting animals, showing how this was done in bygone days. The backdrop sounds from animals accompanies the sounds from clap sticks and didgeridoos for creating a wonderful forest experience.
Go on an aboriginal tour of a dreamtime discovery walk with Pamagirri guides, and watch a spectacle of spear throwing with a Woomera, the playing of a didgeridoo and how they are made. Didgeridoos were used in ceremonies for imitating the sounds made by animals to attract them. Learn more about how and why animals played a huge role in ancient aboriginal history, and take the opportunity to try throwing a boomerang – in a netted safety area.
Hunting in the wild caused aboriginal people to use berries and rainforest fruit for food and medicine which is known as ‘bushtucker.’
